TRAFFIC ALERT - EXPECT DELAYS
On 3/21/2024, the northbound lane of the Orting Kapowsin Highway E/Calistoga Street West will be closed from the Soldiers Home to Eldredge Ave NW near downtown Orting between 09:30 AM and 11:30 AM for the 2024 Lahar Drill.
During the closure, vehicles south of the Puyallup River bridge will not be able to enter Orting and will need to find an alternate route to reach the City Center.
The southbound lane of Calistoga Street (traffic leaving town) will remain open with some delays.
WHY?
Closing the northbound lane of Calistoga Street West is necessary to provide school students and staff a safe amount of space, free of motor vehicles, as they evacuate on foot during the Lahar Drill.
WHEN WILL THE ROAD BE CLOSED?
The northbound lane of the Orting Kapowsin Highway/Calistoga Street will be closed at the Soldiers Home to all vehicles starting at 09:30 am and will re-open at approximately 11:30 am. Vehicles will be turned around at the Soldiers Home and sent back up the hill towards 200th Street during the closure.
HOW DO I GET INTO ORTING DURING THE ROAD CLOSURE?
If you need travel into Orting from the area south of the Puyallup River bridge during the drill, we recommend either doing so prior to 09:30 am, or by entering Orting north via SR162.
WILL I BE ABLE TO LEAVE TOWN DURING THE CLOSURE?
Absolutely! The southbound lane of Calistoga Street will remain open however some delays are expected as evacuating students cross the roadway. There will be no Lahar Drill related traffic delays for vehicles leaving town via SR162 on either end of the City.
