Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Where does my water come from?
A. The City of Orting has several water sources, four wells and four springs. These sources are in various locations of the Orting Valley.
Q. Does my water contain fluoride?
A. At the present time Orting does not add fluoride to the water.
Q. Is there anything added to my water?
A. We add a small amount of chlorine as a disinfectant, 0.5 parts per million. In other words, it’s like adding one half gallon of chlorine to one million gallons of water.
Our water contains manganese naturally and is treated by using a product called Calciquest. The product binds and holds the manganese element together so your water won’t turn brown. Manganese, a secondary contaminant that poses no health risk is more of an aesthetic problem . You can read more about the manganese and it’s occurrences by clicking on the annual Consumer Confidence Report link above.
Q. How can I tell if I have a leak?
A. Turn off all the faucet fixtures in your home and around the outside of your home. Go out to your water meter, usually located near your property line in front of your home, if the small white triangle in the center of your meter is still spinning, then you may have a water leak in your service line. The City of Orting will repair water leaks leading up to your meter. You will have to call a plumber to have your service line repaired. (The service line is the line connecting from the water meter to the building)
Q. Where is my shut-off valve?
A. Located at your meter. It usually takes a special tool to shut off the valve. Please call the Orting Water Dept. to assist you. We offer an after hours emergency phone number as well. (253) 377-0262
