FEMA Flood Map Info
FEMA FLOOD ACTION WILL COST YOU!
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is very close (the next 12-18 months) to declaring that our levee system does not meet its standards and therefore does not exist. This action is occurring all over the country. If the levees are treated as not existing then the 100 year flood plain expands to include homes that are not currently in that plain. In Orting that will add about 1,100 homes.
Once you are included in the flood plain and if you have a mortgage, your mortgage bank will take action to force you to buy flood insurance. The cost of this insurance varies, but on average we expect it to be about $1200/year per home.
New Flood Plain Map: Take a look at the new map to see if your home is included in the flood plain.
What your City Government has done:
Lobbied our federal and state legislators to postpone this FEMA action. Our economy cannot take on this burden at this time. The impact extends beyond the citizens pocket book to include further downward pressure on real estate values. We are also attempting to form a coalition of cities in the flood plain (Sumner, Puyallup, and Fife) to lobby legislators.
The City has taken aggressive action to build a new setback levee on the Puyallup River that meets FEMA standards. This is an $8 million dollar project. To date the City has won approximately $2 million in grants and spent $350,000 from the Storm water fund that your monthly rates support.
What you can do:
1. Contact your state and federal legislators and express your alarm at the FEMA action.
2. Attend City Council meetings and help your Mayor and Council come up with a plan to finance the new setback levee.
3. Attend the FEMA public hearings in our region later this year. The City will publish these dates on this website.
