CITY OF ORTING PUBLIC NOTICE- FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE

The Orting Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan (Plan) was adopted in 2009. It is a comprehensive analysis of flood threats affecting the City with proposed actions to minimize future flood damage. The Plan was drafted during a year-long process by a team of city planners and engineers and extensively reviewed by an advisory committee of state, county, and tribal experts. Public meetings were conducted. Now the Plan needs to be updated to meet federal standards. Having an updated Plan ensures that flood insurance premiums for private property will remain as low as possible.
Since the Plan was adopted, Orting has completed a number of important projects that help to reduce the hazard. The recent completion of the Calistoga Levee protects much of the Puyallup River frontage and the earlier construction of the Soldiers’ Home Levee is another important action. Pierce County is working to improve the Carbon River Levee as well. In 2017, the federal government is expected to certify the new levees which, in turn, will result in a reduction of the flood hazard area in the City.
The Plan update is being conducted by a city-consultant team and will involve a complete review of the current analysis and actions and look forward to new potential actions that should be implemented by 2021. We expect that a draft update of the Plan will be completed by April, 2017. During the next several months, we will schedule public meetings to explain our work.
